Fantasy horror 'Tumbbad' will feature at the 23rd IFFK Midnight
Screening. The film, which portrays the cycle of greed, was premiered in the
critics' week section of the 75th Venice International Film Festival, becoming
the first Indian film to be screened there.
Widely acclaimed as one of the best Indian horror films, the historical
period fantasy is directed by Rahi Anil Barve and Adesh Prasad. It has Anand
Gandhi serving as the co-writer, executive producer, and creative director.
'Tumbbad' received critical acclaim for being the kind of horror film
that plays with one’s mind, and instils the fear of the uncertain and the
unknown. And with clarity, it has intertwined many themes, as it explores
oppression, misogyny, feudalism, and, most importantly, how destructive the
wrath of greed can be.
The film revolves around Hastar, the greedy and gluttonous offspring of
the Goddess of Prosperity, who wanted all the wealth and the food to himself.
It is a tale of how a family, generation after generation, falls into the
endless abyss of greed, for the riches that the beast owned. Besides the Venice
International Film Festival, 'Tumbbad' was screened at several other festivals,
receiving immense critical acclaim for the symbolism, impact, and theme, on top
of its success as a horror film. Though it has its traditional moments of blood
and gore, what makes it an edge-of-the-seat thriller is the depiction of how
ordinary men transform into monsters – or rather, surrender themselves to the
devil inside them.
‘Tumbbad’ will be screened on 08th December at midnight 12:00
AM at the Nishagandhi. The ‘Midnight Screening’ section was introduced last
year at the IFFK, where it was a huge success.
