“There has been criticism, but I am fearless, because I know that there is a silent majority that agrees with me behind the scenes”, said Sri Lankan writer and director Sumathy Sivamohan. She was talking at the last ‘In Conversation’ segment at the 23 rd IFFK. The filmmaker, who is also a poet, essayist, and translator, uses Cinema as a medium to trigger introspection. “My films are all about making the viewers think,” she said, “All of my films are woman-centric. But they don’t go into their psychology. It is about how they are socially embedded.” Her films deal with the Sri Lankan and Tamil politics. “You can change ethnicity by changing your saree. There is nothing in one’s blood, inseparable, about one’s identity. But once you consider this ‘saree’ to be important, wearing it in a different way becomes difficult,” said Sumathy, on asked about the sequence in her film where a woman changes the way she wears a saree, depicting a different ethnicity. “Cinema brings out the

മലയാള സിനിമയിലെ ഒരു നടിക്കുണ്ടായ ദുരനുഭവം സ്ത്രീ സമൂഹത്തിന് ആകെയുണ്ടായ അപമാനമാണെന്ന് ചലച്ചിത്ര നിരൂപകയായ മീനാക്ഷി ഷെഡ്ഡെ. അതിനെതിരെ സിനിമാരംഗത്തു നിന്നുണ്ടായ എതിര്‍ശബ്ദങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് താന്‍ പിന്തുണ പ്രഖ്യാപിക്കുന്നതായും അവര്‍ പറഞ്ഞു. രാജ്യാന്തര ചലച്ചിത്ര മേളയുടെ ഭാഗമായി ഇന്ത്യന്‍ സിനിമയിലെ സ്ത്രീ സ്വാധീനം എന്ന വിഷയത്തില്‍ നടന്ന ഓപ്പണ്‍ ഫോറത്തില്‍ സംസാരിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു അവര്‍. മലയാള സിനിമയിലെ വനിതാകൂട്ടായ്മയായ ഡബ്ലൂ.സി.സിയുടെ പ്രവര്‍ത്തനങ്ങള്‍ ചലച്ചിത്രരംഗത്ത് പ്രവര്‍ത്തിക്കുന്ന സ്ത്രീകള്‍ക്ക് ധൈര്യം പകരുന്നുണ്ട്. ഈ മാതൃക മറ്റ് സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളിലെ വനിതാ ചലച്ചിത്രപ്രവര്‍ത്തകരും പിന്തുടരണമെന്നും അവര്‍ അഭ്യര്‍ത്ഥിച്ചു. അപമാനങ്ങളെ ചോദ്യം ചെയ്യാന്‍ മീ ടു കാമ്പയിന്‍ സ്ത്രീ സമൂഹത്തിനാകെ ശക്തിനല്‍കുന്നുണ്ടെന്നും അവര്‍ വ്യക്തമാക്കി.  മലയാള സിനിമയില്‍ സൃഷ്ടിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന സ്ത്രീ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങള്‍ ഇവിടുത്തെ സ്ത്രീ സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ പ്രതീകങ്ങളാണെന്നും ഓപ്പണ്‍ ഫോറത്തില്‍ പങ്കെടുത്ത ഉമാ ദാ കുന്‍ഹ പറഞ്ഞു. അസ്സമീസ് സംവിധായികയായ ബോബി ശര്‍മ്മ പങ്കെടുത്ത ചര്‍ച്ചയില്‍  എഴുത്തുകാരി മീന ടി പിള്ള മോഡറേറ്ററായിരുന്നു.

തിരശ്ശീല വീഴാന്‍ പകല്‍ ബാക്കിനില്‍ക്കെ ചലച്ചിത്രമേളയുടെ ആറാംനാളില്‍ ഉറുഗ്വേന്‍ സംവിധായകന്‍ അല്‍വേരോ ബ്രക്‌നറിന്റെ എ ട്വല്‍വ് ഈയര്‍ നൈറ്റ് പ്രേക്ഷകമനസ്സ് കീഴടക്കി. 1973 ല്‍ പട്ടാളഭരണത്തിന് കീഴിലുള്ള ഉറുഗ്വേയില്‍ രാഷ്ട്രീയ തടവുകാരനായി പിടിക്കപ്പെട്ട പെപ്പെ മുജിഗയുടെ ജയില്‍ ജീവിതം അടയാളപ്പെടുത്തിയ ചിത്രം പ്രേക്ഷകര്‍ നിറഞ്ഞ കൈയ്യടിയോടെ ഏറ്റെടുത്തു. മത്സര വിഭാഗത്തിലെ മലയാള ചിത്രമായ സുഡാനി ഫ്രം നൈജീരിയ, വനൂരി കൈഹുവിന്റെ റഫീക്കി, എല്‍ ഏയ്ഞ്ചല്‍, റോജോ, ഷോപ്പ്‌ലിഫ്‌റ്റെഴ്‌സ്, ഡോണ്‍ബാസ് തുടങ്ങിയ ചിത്രങ്ങളും പ്രേക്ഷകത്തിരക്കിലാണ് പ്രദര്‍ശിപ്പിച്ചത്. കാന്‍ രാജ്യാന്തര ചലച്ചിത്രമേളയില്‍ പ്രദര്‍ശിപ്പിച്ച ദി ഹൗസ് ദാറ്റ് ജാക്ക് ബില്‍റ്റ്, അലി അബ്ബാസിയുടെ ബോര്‍ഡര്‍, കിം കി ദക്കിന്റെ ഹ്യൂമന്‍ സ്‌പേസ് ടൈം ആന്റ് ഹ്യൂമന്‍, അല്‍ഫോണ്‍സോ കുവറോണിന്റെ റോമ എന്നീ ചിത്രങ്ങളും ആറാം ദിവസം പ്രേക്ഷക പ്രീതി നേടി.

23-ാമത് രാജ്യാന്തര ചലച്ചിത്രമേളയുടെ സമാപന ദിനമായ ഇന്ന് ഏഴ് മത്സര ചിത്രങ്ങള്‍ ഉള്‍പ്പെട 37 ചിത്രങ്ങള്‍ പ്രദര്‍ശിപ്പിക്കും. വനൗരി കഹ്യു സംവിധാനം ചെയ്ത റഫീക്കി, റുമേനിയന്‍ ചിത്രം ലമണെയ്ഡ്, ക്രിസ്റ്റ്യാനോ ഗലേഗോയുടെ ബേര്‍ഡ്‌സ് ഓഫ് പാസേജ്, ഖസാക്കിസ്ഥാന്‍ ചിത്രം ദി റിവര്‍, മത്സര വിഭാഗത്തിലെ ഇന്ത്യന്‍ ചിത്രമായ വിഡോ ഓഫ് സൈലന്‍സ് തുടങ്ങിയവയും ഇതില്‍ ഉള്‍പ്പെടും. റിമമ്പറിങ്ങ് ദി മാസ്റ്റര്‍ വിഭാഗത്തില്‍ മിലോസ് ഫോര്‍മാന്റെ അമേദ്യൂസും ചലച്ചിത്ര പ്രതിഭ ഇഗ്മര്‍ ബര്‍ഗ്മാനോടുള്ള ആദരസൂചകമായി പെര്‍സോണ എന്ന ചിത്രവും പ്രദര്‍ശിപ്പിക്കും. നിശാഗന്ധിയില്‍ വൈകിട്ട് ആറിന് സമാപന ചടങ്ങിന് ശേഷം സുവര്‍ണ ചകോരം നേടുന്ന ചിത്രത്തിന്റെ പ്രത്യേക പ്രദര്‍ശനവുമുണ്ടാകും.

കൊല്‍ക്കത്ത രാജ്യാന്തര ചലച്ചിത്രമേളയടക്കം നിരവധി മേളകളില്‍ പ്രദര്‍ശിപ്പിച്ച ഇറാനിയന്‍ സംവിധായകന്‍ മജീദ് മജീദിയുടെ മുഹമ്മദ്: ദ മെസ്സഞ്ചര്‍ ഓഫ് ഗോഡിന് പ്രദര്‍ശനം നിഷേധിച്ചത് കേന്ദ്രസര്‍ക്കാരെന്ന് അക്കാദമി വൈസ് ചെയര്‍പേഴ്‌സണും ആര്‍ട്ടിസ്റ്റിക് ഡയറക്ടറുമായ ബീനാ പോള്‍ പറഞ്ഞു. ചലച്ചിത്ര മേളയുടെ ഭാഗമായി സംഘടിപ്പിച്ച ഓപ്പണ്‍ ഫോറത്തില്‍ സംസാരിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു അവര്‍. പ്രദര്‍ശനാനുമതി തേടി ആഴ്ചകള്‍ക്കു മുന്‍പേ അപേക്ഷ നല്‍കിയിരുന്നെങ്കിലും കേന്ദ്രസര്‍ക്കാര്‍ സിനിമ പ്രദര്‍ശിപ്പിക്കണമെന്നോ വേണ്ടയോ എന്ന് അറിയിച്ചില്ല. മറുപടിയൊന്നും നല്‍കാതെ അപേക്ഷയെ അവഗണിച്ച് കേന്ദ്രം കേരളത്തോടുള്ള സമീപനം വെളിപ്പെടുത്തിയതായും അവര്‍ പറഞ്ഞു. ചിത്രത്തിന്റെ പ്രദര്‍ശനാനുമതി നിഷേധിച്ചതായി അറിയിക്കുന്നതുവഴിയുണ്ടാകുന്ന പ്രതിഷേധങ്ങള്‍ ഭയന്നാണ് മറുപടിയൊന്നും നല്‍കാത്തത്. ഇത് കേന്ദ്ര സര്‍ക്കാരിന്റെ കള്ളക്കളിയാണ് വെളിപ്പെടുത്തുന്നതെന്നും ബീനാപോള്‍ വ്യക്തമാക്കി. തിയേറ്ററുകളില്‍ ദേശീയഗാനം നിര്‍ബന്ധമാക്കിയതിനെതിരെയും സ്ത്രീകള്‍ക്ക് പൊതു ഇടങ്ങള്‍ നിഷേധിക്കുന്നതിനെക്കുറിച്ചും സജീവമായ  സംവാദങ്ങളും പ്രതികരണങ്ങളും നടത്തിയ വേദിയാണ് ഐ.എ

രാഷ്ട്രീയ ആശയ പ്രചാരണത്തിനുള്ള ഉപാധിയായാണ് സിനിമയെ തമിഴ്ചലച്ചിത്രലോകം കാണുന്നതെന്ന് സംവിധായകന്‍ വെട്രിമാരന്‍. പൊതുജനങ്ങളിലേക്കെത്താനുള്ള ഏറ്റവും ശക്തമായ മാധ്യമം സിനിമയാണെന്ന് തിരിച്ചറിവുള്ളതുകൊണ്ടാണ് ഇതെന്നും ചലച്ചിത്രമേളയോട് അനുബന്ധിച്ചുള്ള ഇന്‍ കോണ്‍സര്‍വേഷനില്‍ പങ്കെടുക്കവെ അദ്ദേഹം പറഞ്ഞു.  സാധാരണക്കാരുടെ ഭാഷയും സംസ്‌കാരവുമാണ് ഭൂരിപക്ഷം തമിഴ ്‌സിനിമകളും പങ്കുവയ്ക്കുന്നത്. അതുപയോഗപ്പെടുത്തിയാണ് താരങ്ങള്‍ രാഷ്ട്രീയത്തിലേക്ക് പ്രവേശിക്കുന്നതെന്നും അദ്ദേഹം വ്യക്തമാക്കി.  വീരോചിതമായി പ്രശ്‌നങ്ങള്‍ പരിഹരിക്കുന്ന നായകനെയാണ് തമിഴ്‌സിനിമാ പ്രേക്ഷകര്‍ ഇഷ്ടപ്പെടുന്നത്. തങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് പരിഹരിക്കാന്‍ കഴിയാത്ത പ്രശ്‌നങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് സിനിമയിലെ നായകന്‍ പരിഹാരം കാണുന്നതുവഴിയുള്ള ആത്മസംതൃപ്തിയാണ് ഇതുവഴി പ്രേക്ഷകര്‍ക്ക് ലഭിക്കുന്നത്. ഇതാണ് തമിഴ് ബ്ലോക്ക്ബസ്റ്റര്‍ സിനിമകളുടെ സൂത്രവാക്യമെന്നും വെട്രിമാരന്‍ പറഞ്ഞു. അക്കാദമി ഡെപ്യൂട്ടി ഡയറക്ടര്‍ (ഫെസ്റ്റിവല്‍) എച്ച്. ഷാജി പങ്കെടുത്തു.

A motorcycle awareness rally, organized by No Shave November India headed by Raru Chempazanthy, was flagged off by Kamal, Chairman, Kerala State Chalachitra Academy. The rally which started from Tagore Theatre, Trivandrum, will have riders travelling to Kasargod and back in eight days, with the mission of raising funds of 15 lakhs for a noble cause – a liver transplantation for a four-year old. Raru, who initiated No Shave November in India, will lead the mission along with Shiny, the first woman rider to ride from Kanyakumari to Himalaya. Raru will ride the entire course, while others including rider club and beard club members will join on the way. The rally will come to a close on December 20. Raru established No Shave November India four years back along with his friend Antos, aiming to help fund cancer treatment. “We couldn’t screen the film ‘Muhammad: The Messenger of God’ by Majid Majidi in the IFFK because the Central Government did not give us permission to screen it”, said Bina Paul, artistic director, IFFK. The film which screened in various international film festivals including the Kolkata International Film Festival couldn’t be screened in Kerala due to censorship issues. The film festival coordinators were in a legal bind. “The Central Government, on the film’s screening have not said a ‘No’, but not a ‘Yes’ either. A total of 36 films will be screened tomorrow (Dec 13), the final day of the 23rd edition of the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK). After a week of exquisite Cinema experience for cinephiles, the 23 rd edition of the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) is coming to a close tomorrow (Dec 13). The capital city witnessed over160 internationally acclaimed films, screened at 13 theatres. The fest, like last years, turned to be a forum to exchange ideas of socio-cultural and political views. “Exerting restriction on film subsidies affects the life and growth of art films all around the world”, said Argentinean filmmaker Monica Lairana at the ‘Meet The Press’ session at the 23rd IFFK. “The fund and subsidies provided by the film institutes are being withdrawn by them in Argentina. The economic crisis happening in different parts of the globe are affecting the film industry and this reflects in the production of the films too”, stated Monica, the director of ‘The Bed’ screening in the International Competition. “The making of ‘The Bed’ focused on the works of naked bodies and how time reflects the changes over the years on the physicality of people of all ages. Dialogues are of very less importance in the film”, said Monica. “Acknowledgement of this film in the IFFK is our biggest appreciation and this is our way of fighting against the government trying to take out money from the film institutes which fund the films in Argentina”, she added. Late violinist Bala Bhaskar’s music band ‘Big Band’ performed an instrumental fusion treat at the Tagore theatre, in association with the cultural programmes held at the 23rd International Film Festival of Kerala. The band was formed and owned by Bala Bhaskar. The remarkable performance, took the audience along a trip down the memory lane. The band performed songs composed by the band’s former lead performer who passed away two months back. Young filmmakers of the Malayalam film industry will discuss on the topic ‘Malayalam Cinema: Reforms of Perceptions’ today in the IFFK Open Forum session. Filmmakers Dr. Bijukumar Damodaran, P K Bijukuttan, Unnikrishnan Avala, A K Vinu, Binu Bhaskar, Sumesh Lal, Sudeep Elamon, Gautham Soorya, Vipin Radhakrishnan, Zakariya will take part. IFFK Jury Chairman and Iranian filmmaker Majid Majidi will participate in the ‘In Conversation’ session at 2 PM.

The IFFK screenings have been rescheduled following the cancelled shows at the Tagore Theatre owing to technical inconveniences. As the theatre is all set to resume screenings with ‘Taking the Horse to Eat Jalebis’ at 6 PM today (Dec 10), the other changes have been finalized. On December 10, ‘The Bed’ will be screened at 3 PM and ‘Pity’ at 10.15 PM in Dhanya Theatre. On December 11, ‘The Graveless’ will be screened at 8 PM and ‘Lemonade’ at 9:30 PM at the Tagore. On December 12, ‘El Angel’ at 8 PM and ‘The Image Book’ at 10:30 PM will be screened at Tagore, ‘The Dark Room’ at 6 PM in New Screen 2, ‘The Red Phallus’ at 3:15 PM New Screen 3, ‘The Poisonous Roses’ at 6 PM and ‘A Tramway Jerusalem’ at 10:15 PM in Sree Padmanabha. On December 13, ‘Sudani From Nigeria’ will be screened in Kalabhavan at 3:15 PM.

The cancelled screenings of Tagore theatre, will be resuming from today (Dec 10) evening. ‘Taking the Horse to Eat Jalebis’ directed by Anamika Haksar will be screened at 6 PM, followed by Sergei Loznitsa’s ‘Donbass’ at 8:30 PM.

At the 23 rd IFFK, renowned cinematographer Anil Mehta, will lead a Master-Class on cinematography today (Dec 10) from 2 PM to 6 PM at Hotel Horizon. The session is being organized by the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy for film students and cinephiles, in association with K R Narayan National Institute Of Visual Science And Arts (KRNNIVSA). The National Award winning cinematographer of ‘ Khamoshi: The Musical ’ (1996), ‘ Lagaan ’ (2001),’  Saathiya ’ (2002),’ Veer-Zaara ’ (2004), and ‘ Jab Tak Hai Jaan ’ (2012) has worked with eminent personalities including Mani Kaul and Majid Majidi .
